Diabetic Eye Health Examinations
It is well documented that diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in younger Americans and that 50% of diabetic complications are missed without a dilated evaluation. At MCEC, dilation of the eyes is always an integral element to your eye care and with the presence of diabetes it is essential. The diabetic eye health examination always begins with a thorough dilated retinal evaluation and a detailed retinal image for evaluation and documentation. For higher risk patients, our Doctors will utilize the Spectralis laser, which is the most accurate technology presently available for the detection of early diabetic eye disease (the Spectralis laser can detect retinal changes of one micron, or 1/100th of a human hair). A summary of the eye examination portfolio will be sent annually to the endocrinologist and family doctor to maintain communication with contributing providers.
It is important to remember that early signs of diabetic eye disease rarely produce visual complaints and that by the time a patient is aware of a visual problem it is often too late for full visual recovery.
